History[edit]
In 1912, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth purchased an estate which included a mansion and auxiliary buildings on Newburg Road in Louisville, which they named Mt. St. Agnes Sanitarium. The Sanitarium opened in 1913, for the care of sisters and laity with psychiatric problems or tuberculosis. Located on a hill in a forested area outside the city limits, it provided privacy, a scenic view and a healthful atmosphere. Mt. St. Agnes operated from 1913–1951, when insufficient space, inadequate equipment, and the increasing population of the Louisville area made it evident that a larger psychiatric facility was needed. The hospital was demolished when the new Our Lady Of Peace hospital opened.
