History[edit]

The Department of Psychiatry in WRH serves a population of 250000 in the South-East of Ireland. It is the acute admission unit for Waterford and Wexford, with 44 acute beds. There is a rehabilitation unit and several high support hostels which provide a trainee with experience in managing those with severe and enduring mental illness.

There is an old age psychiatry unit for those with dementia who need long-term psychiatric care. The psychiatric service at WRH is a service that has recently undergone a lot of change with the expansion of community services.
