These are mental health institutions located in and primarily publicly funded by the American states. Along with state funds, later on beginning in the 1960’s these hospitals would also receive federal Medicate fund for each patients. However, these hospitals would also receive privately funded patients in a limited amount.

The first public state hospital to be founded in the United States of America was Virginia’s Eastern State Hospital in 1773. The land for the hospital was donated by the House of Burgesses in 1769.
