Original building was built in 1833. it began as a single building almshouse which later grew to multiple buildings, one being dedicated to care of the insane. Later the insane department closed and the building was used for contagious disease and quarantine. It was last used as a nursing home.
In 2011 the original 1833 building was completely demolished. It stood on the current campus of Penn State Schuylkill.
