| − | In 1827 the Oneida County Poor House opened its doors to paupers and the insane. It was located in the outskirts of Lynchville near Rome, NY on 115 acres of land. There are 560 inmates on the land and 97 of them are insane. The Oneida County Poor House remained open until 1893 when it shifted its focus to a school to treat individuals suffering from "unteachable mental defectives". In 1894 the property became the Rome State Custodial Asylum which was one of the first asylums for the "untrainable". The Rome State Custodial Hospital remained open until 1989 when in October of that year the last patient left and the hospital proceeded to close its doors that November.
