Mansfield Training School and Hospital

This history of Mansfield Training School is very similar to other institutions of its type. It originally started out as two separate institutions. The first institution was founded in 1860 as the Connecticut School for Imbeciles at Lakeville. In 1910, a second intuition was also founded by the name of the Connecticut Colony for Epileptics. In 1915, the first institution was renamed Connecticut Training School for Feebleminded at Lakeville. Then two years later the two institutions were merged and renamed Mansfield Training School and Hospital. The patient population continued to grow until 1978 the population was 1,870 people. It was also around this time that various law suits were filed against the institution for a variety of reasons including the conditions and patient treatment. The institution was finally closed in 1993 and the remaining patients were sent to group homes and other state institutions.
