From a single structure in 1855, it grew into a campus of more than 130 buildings in Southeast Washington. It was, by the early 20th century, known as St. Elizabeths, for the colonial land grant on which it was built, and it had become, in the words of an admirer, one of the "great, grand" dames of American psychiatric hospitals.

A proposal to cut 50 beds at the region's public psychiatric hospital is generating concern from North Texas officials. The loss of 50 beds at the 300-bed Terrell State Hospital is one of many proposed cuts to close a state budget gap of up to $15 billion. But local officials said it would be one of the most painful.

April 10, 2010 Fire damages historic Richardson complex

Fire damaged the tower of the historic H. H. Richardson Complex in Buffalo early Saturday morning. Two alarms were sounded shortly after 3:00am. Firefighters confined the fire to the second floor. It caused an esimated $200,000 in damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Union workers from the Fulton State Hospital delivered hundreds of petition cards to the governor's office on Thursday to fight to save their jobs and their services. The workers face desperate times. They've been told that, beginning fairly soon and continuing through the end of next year, as many as 200 of their colleagues could lose their jobs at the hospital.

They have sturdy floors, engineered to support heavy equipment but difficult to drill through for new wiring and plumbing.
