History
In 1859 Greene County accepted an act authorizing the erection of a County Home for the Poor. Little is known of the early years of the Poor Home's operation. After an unpleasant review of the Home was published in the 'Atlantic Monthly'; in 1881, a reform campaign was launched to improve the conditions. Additions, including a kitchen, laundry, an area for church services and a separate building for heating equipment, were constructed in 1886. Oral histories from workers in the home in the 1930s, 40s and 50s reported the conditions for those living there were exceptional. It became a fully functional, self-sustaining, clean and well-run facility, according to reports.
