History[edit]

The Home was opened by proclamation of Governor Marcus L. Ward on June 28th, 1867 as the New Jersey State Reform School. The New Jersey Training School (NJTS) is the Juvenile Justice Commission's largest facility currently housing approximately 200 male juveniles. Today, NJTS is a secure facility with a state of the art perimeter fence and 24-hour armed roving patrol. Residents range in age from 12 to 23 years of age with the vast majority of residents being 16 to 18 years old.
