History
The Jay County Infirmary was built in 1895 to serve the people of the town of Portland and Jay County, Indiana. The facility still functions as a county home under the name Jay County Retirement Center. The facility consisted of the main brick building, a basement barn, a barn, a hay feeder, hay barn, garage, tool shed, blacksmith shop, slaughterhouse, chicken coop, and windmill. A cemetery on site is located 90 yards northwest of the house. [1]
