History Opened in 1884 under the directorship of James McBride, MD, the Milwaukee Sanitarium was a for profit sanitarium for the treatment of TB. Formerly Medical Superintendent of the Milwaukee County Hospital for the Insane, which opened in 1880, Dr. McBride served as superintendent of the sanitarium until his retirement. The institution served as a private, for profit TB sanatorium until 1954.
In 1954 the facility became a non-profit facility and became affiliated with Marquette University School of Medicine in 1955. In 1964 the hospital changed its name to Milwaukee Psychiatric Hospital due to a shift in the patient type that were seen at the facility. In 1964 the Kradwell School also opened on the grounds to assist with the education of the growing adolescent population that was being seen. In 1993 the facility became affiliated with Aurora Psychiatric Hospital, an affiliate of Aurora Health Systems.
