History

Built around 1900 this facility served as a medical evaluation center before being converted to a full time prison in 1975. the facility reopened as Dodge Correctional Institution sometime in 1976 or 1977. In 1991 the facility was added to the national historic register.

Ed Gein was housed at Wisconsin Central State Hospital before being transferred to Mendota Mental Hospital. Attempted presidential assassin John Schrank was also help at Central State Hospital from 1912-1943 for his attempt to kill Theodore Roosevelt.
