History[edit]
In 1864, residents of Crawford County approved a measure to build the Crawford County Infirmary, shown here. A similar measure was defeated in 1851, but passed in 1864 after the county agreed to build the infirmary between Galion and Bucyrus, rather than in Bucyrus. The three-story brick building was built on 240 acres in Whetstone Township. The outbuildings and a facility for the mentally ill were added later. Inmates of the infirmary who were able to work farmed and made much of their own food and provisions.
