The first building of what became the Marcy State Hospital, formerly known as the Pittsburgh City Tuberculosis Sanatorium, opened for patients on September 15, 1915. The Sanatorium was turned over to the State in 1957 and became affiliated with the Department of Health. In October 1974, the facility was reconstituted as a rehabilitation center for the mentally retarded and responsibility for the institution was placed under the Department of Public Welfare.
