Monroe County Asylum
Current Status Still Standing
Location Sparta, Wisconsin
Alternate Names
  • Monroe county almshouse and insane asylum

History

In 1900 a brick home for the poor, or almshouse, was built on a former farm in Sparta, Wisconsin after the decision to close the old almshouse was made in 1899. Many felt the old almost house was too far from the county seat and inaccessible for use in warehousing the indigent and poor children most often assigned there. In 1901 the poor house was than converted into the county asylum and a new poor house was constructed in 1902 on a different part of the property. More information on the county and the asylum can be found here [1]
