Night watchman duties County Asylum

My grandfather worked as a night watchman at the asylum from around 1915-1920 (my grandmother was a baker there from 1918-1920, so the asylum is where they met). I am wondering if there is any information available about the type of duties the night watchmen might have had, and/or their equipment (did they have flashlights yet?).
