Editing Fulton County House

Summary:  I learned the Fulton County Poor House was founded in 1857. There were about 70 people there and ten of them were ‘insane’. The Poor House was not set up for the care of people with mental illness. It did not function well. People did not have work to do and there was no medical care. I was not able to see if it still exists today. Compared to what we talked about in class, the Fulton County Poor House did not have any children, and it was smaller.

“The lands of what is now Fulton County have undergone many name changes, Fulton County is one of the youngest counties formed in New York State (only three other counties were formed after 1838). This land was originally Albany County. In 1772, Tryon County was formed from Albany County, which then included Herkimer and Montgomery Counties, too. “Prior to the 18th century, the lands that would become Fulton County were used by the Mohawk Indians as hunting and fishing grounds. Quality of Property
“The building is of brick, two stories high, with ceilings of nine feet, the rooms 18 x 50, with windows 4 x 2 1/2 feet. All the rooms have bedsteads in them; the bedding is of straw, and none sleep on straw only” (lsstuhler, 2013).

Quality of Living
“The diet provided is simple, but nutritious, and all come to the table and receive their food on plates” (lsstuhler, 2013).
