NEFSH has provided continuous service to persons with severe and persistent mental illness has been available since 1959. The facility operates 613 beds and is the largest state owned provider of psychiatric care and treatment to civilly committed individuals in Florida. Referrals are based upon community and district priorities for admission. Current bed utilization rate is at 100%, with a total of 814 persons served in fiscal year 2006-07. With a daily bed cost of $233 per day, NEFSH provides 24-hour residential care at one of the lowest per diem rates in the country.
