History

The Maybury Sanatorium operated on the site of the current state park from 1919-1969. At one time it served people who were diagnosed with tuberculosis at a time when there was no real cure for the disease. Northville Township was relatively sparsely populated back then—development was decades away from the fringes of western Wayne County. By the late 1960s, low populations led to the hospital's closure & was sold to the state of Michigan for $3 million in 1971. In 1975 Maybury State park opened on the site of the former facility after all buildings had been demolished.
