To Whom that May Be Able to Help!

I am currently searching for information on how to find out if my great grandfather suffered from a mental disorder and died in a institution in the state of Tennessee. My father and I are on a geneological search as he was pronounced with skitzophrenia in 1979. This mental disorder is suppose to be hereditary. We only have rumors from past family members that my great grandfather was "driven insane by his wife". His name is John L. Phillips, born in 1868 in Scott County Tennessee. He passed away when my Grandfather was young. We tracked a death certificate down to 1933. Certificate number is 2362. We are not sure if this is him, but it is the same name. We have worked with Ancestry.Com and have found him and relatives but no death certificate. If anyone could please help me and my father it would be greatly appreciated. My father is a Vietnam vet who I believed was misdiagnosed. We have to be able to prove that there is no mental disorders in our history though. And my great grandfather is the only one who we are having great difficulty tracking any information on. And I know that sometimes death records with mental institutions can be sketchy when trying to aquire them.
