For a couple years I've been stopping by the cemetery for this institution & pulling weeds and doing some clean-up. It closed long ago and only 1 building (maybe 2) remains. Recently I was contacted by someone with the Kentucky department of Patient Protection & Advocacy, wanting to know more about it. Turns out they had been already researching it and want to do a full-scale project on it. Fortunately I can had this off to them so I don't have to do all the work. Since only 14 or 15 graves have names, they plan on identifying everyone buried there and giving them a marker. Since they are part of the state, it should be much easier then the Eastern State project. They did share some records they have from the 1860s-1940s and sounds like the place was even worse then the other state hospitals at times, they ended up housing children with adults for many years. In the near future we hope to get started with a public "open house', most people that drive by it everyday have no idea what the cemetery is. Not a very big cemetery nor is it known how many are buried there, also it's suspected there's a second cemetery somewhere on the former property.

At some point the original markers were removed. They were only a number but probably went with a plot map of the cemetery.

A handful actually have a name on them. Julia was admitted sometime in the 1920s as an epileptic and died there after about 40 years as a patient.

Murl died at the age of 30 from a low-grade staph infection after 18 years as a patient there. He was 12 when admitted to the institution. His death certificate states he had polio & mental retardation.

Wilson was a patient at the hospital for 45 years, since he was 9 years old, at the age of 54. He died from a stroke and the names of his parents were listed as "unknown". Not sure why he was at the hospital, the death certificate states "mental retardation" as a contributory cause though.

In 1909 a family of six kids (Farney's) were put into this hospital after their mother died. Not sure why. I know 4 finally got out and one was transferred to Pike Co. Ohio and one we have never gotten any info on. Looking for any help I can get on this family. rtravis45@hotmail.com

Looking for records, a grave, or any information on Oliver Franklin Kaufman born 1878. I have proof he was arrested then moved to the insane asylum around 1909-1910. But their aren't any records on way happened to him after about 929-1930.
