My Great Grandfather was listed in the 1910 Census as an "inmate" at Kankakee State Hospital. He was released at some point, but I have an interest in knowing the reason and the length of stay there. Anything new on them releasing information?

His name was Hiram Jasper Bradley.

No updates on release of information. I'll stop by in the next few days to discuss the issue with someone at the hospital, not expecting much though.

Finding mother and father history
I just recently received my original birth certificate. I was adopted but always wanted to find out about my parentage. Mine is unique in that I knew my real mother. I just know anything about her life. On my birth certificate I see that I was born in Kankakee State hospital in 1964. My mother's name is Laura Hardy and my father's name is listed as Nelson Glenn. I need to know if my father was a patient there as well. From what I've read about this hospital it appears to have been a horrific place. Any leads or information would be appreciated.

Census records wont help since they only recently released the 1940 ones, and 1950s will be in another 10 years. I searched his name but there are alot of Nelson Glenns in Illinois, mostly much older ones though. Records that new would be tough to get access to from the state. Although since it is your father, the state law says they have to make them available. If he is still alive that makes obtaining records another issue. You could start with this article about Illinois state hospital records. Records of State Mental Hospitals

I found a Raymond Frederick Jacobus that died May 5th, 1967 in Kankakee, IL. He was born September 14, 1903 & in the 1940 census he was an inmate at Chicago State Hospital. No other details available online. If you think that is him I'll look further.

Bray 1964
Hello, I am trying to find information about a female African-American patient by the last name of Bray. Her first name may be Quilla. According to what I have been told, she gave birth to twin girls (I am one of them) at Kankakee State Hospital in February, 1964. Any information you can obtain is appreciated.

I am trying to find out why my great grandfather was listed as an inmate in the 1940's Census at the Kankakee State Hospital. He was also listed as living there in 1935.

Do you have any information you can send me?

Thanks.

I am looking for my Uncle's maternal grandmother, Vera Taylor Stroh. Last known address was inmate at Kankakee State Hospital, 1940 census. He believes she died there on 16 NOV 1956 but can't verify this as I don't have a grave stone, death cert, newspaper obit, etc.. I can't find ANYTHING on this woman. Taylor is her first married name; parents' names unknown. Any hints on how I can go about finding anything on this woman would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

nora Gray Nelson
I believe my great aunt, Nora Nelson and great uncle, Bert Gray, were patients/inmates about 1910-1940. Would there be a place to obtain their records? I am trying to trace my ancestry and know that my grandmother, Rosa Gray Vickers said they were in an institution. Please e-mail me if records are available @ cvt1127@cox.net or call me @ 702-243-3595. My name is Caryl Vickers-Taylor. Thank you.

Good Morning, I am hoping someone might be able to help me. My Great-great grandmother, Lillie O. Wingler, was an 'inmate' at the Kankakee State Hospital from November 1909 to January 1913. She is listed in the 1910 Census. I have thus far been unable to find an obituary or location of burial for her. We know she died in a hospital, and this thread is my first glimmer of hope for finding a burial location.

There was a post from a few years ago mentioning a contact person for information:

According to Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, if you want information on State Hospital graves, you should contact Mr. Jim Carlson, Cemetery Oversight Division (888-756-8331)...

Does anyone know if this person is still there or who the new individual may be? I am hoping to just find out if she is, in fact, buried in the hospital cemetery, as I assume seeing the grave would be nothing short of a miracle.

Thank you!

I talked to someone at that department finally, they have nothing to do with state institution cemeteries, so that's a dead end unfortunately. The woman I talked to was very nice, but apparently Illinois has a law that says anything regarding burials is secret (including headstones). It must be a new law! You could try calling the hospital, I'll look for the contact info I have.
