Any idea who I could contact to see if records for patients/clients still exist from this institution which is now closed? My uncle lived there for a good number of years and I'd like to find out his official diagnosis. This is regarding John Francis Lindsay who diedat that facility in the early 1960's.

Records appear to have been transferred to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital which is an affiliate of Rochester General health system, but I am not completely sure on this. Let me double check that and I will try to get back and give you contact information.

Sorry, is this the same person as the original poster? Due to fairly strict HIPAA laws it is very hard to get medical records for family unless you are a power of attorney or can show medical cause for your doctor to request them. Most of the records from this time period would be covered by HIPAA rules even if the patient is deceased. Your best bet is to post more information on the facility and we can make some suggestions on how to get the records or who to contact, but unfortunately, we cannot usually get the records for you. You may be able to get them from the NEW York Department of Mental Health and Hygiene. http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/home/home.shtml

This is another guest interested in finding out more about this facility for my senior paper. I don't nessacarilly want individual patient information, just basics of what happened and why. Not to who. Any possible links or contacts would be greatly appreciated.

Your brother is listed as buried in that cemetery, but no plot or grave number, not unusual unfortunately. He is listed on the entries for that cemetery on findagrave. Here is a map that gives the location of the cemetery Cemetery Map.

I just found out today that my great aunt spent much of her life at Newark State School. We have no idea what was wrong with her or whatever happened to her. Can anyone offer any help? Her name was Minnie Stevens. Thank you in advance! S. Stevens

Newark State Hospital Records
My Great Grandmother, Annabell, Anna, Spencer was an inmate from about 1920 til her death about 1957. I never meet her or saw her until her death. I went to her burial. I would like to have any info that maybe available.

Thank you,
Earl Spencer

2 Aunts at Newark
I would like any information if possible on 2 sisters. Margaret Anne Blackmon, and Elizabeth Blackmon. Margaret Anne was born late 1920's and Elizabeth late 1930's. I have a picture of Margaret sitting on the lawn in front of this building in 1933 or 1934. My mother was born in 1937 and remembers very vaguely, visiting them. She is now 80 and needs some closure as to where they are buried at, as we assume they are no longer alive. I searched the cemetery, and there names were not there. I saw another site had graves marked with numbers and no names of psychiatric patients. How can we find out this information, and does any of the workers remember the girls?
