Hello,

I'm a history buff and become interested in learning about the history of the old Hawthornden State Hospital in Sagamore Hills, Ohio. I'm especially interested in old grounds of the facility and how it was being used back when it was known as Hawthornden and then as Western Reserve. Much of the surrounding area is wooded and the remains of old buildings, roads, and pathways throughout the property.

It would be greatly appreciated if someone could point to towards books, articles or people I could speak with about this facility.

Thanks,

John

These should give you a start, if you can point to more specific points on the property I can better try to answer questions. I found most of this after a quick google search so with some more in depth looking you should be able to find what you are interested in.

Hawthornden/WRPHC/NCBH
Greetings Sagamore and Evilavatar,
It's been almost a year and I was wondering if this thread is still open?
I too am interested in local history www.facebook.com/akronhistory
http://akronhistory.org/blog/ and after studying most other parts of the county, and after working at Northcoast (going back as far as WRPHC) for 28 years, I am trying to compile a history of the hospital.
I was wondering, Sagamore, if you found any other information and/or sources.

Thanks, Rudy

Thanks for the links Evilavatar! I was just at the property today with my dog. I discovered an old tunnel network that must have linked all the buildings together. I wish there was more info out there.

Hi John,
I have worked at the hospital for the past 29 years and also have a webpage about and called the History of Akron & Summit County. Akronhistory.org akronhistory/facebook.com
Currently I am working on a history of the hospital. I am still in the research stages but so far I have collected many pictures, maps, and other information including a couple of histories through the '50s/'60s. Once I have completed a current history, I'll post it on my blog (akronhistory.org/blog) then come back on here and let you and the others know.

Hawthornden
I also worked there between 1972 and 1980, or so. As a nursing assistant on the over night. I actually found looking back that the residents got wonderful care there. It seemed pleasant during the day, the grounds always kepts well and the cottages building also. Cafeteria, food, meals were great. I recall the tunnels, yep walked them some in the bad weather.

Hawthornden original building
When was the original building raised? My grandmother was there and died there in 1985?
Any information is appreciated.

I worked in Maximum security in the late 70s/early 80s
Hi, I worked at WRPHC in the late 70s and left in 1982- I got married and transferred to the Toledo mental hospital. Someone told me that WRPHC was no longer open, so I googled it and ended up here. My supervisor was Bill Meadows.

Info on the "trinity" of hospitals
Hawthornden/Western Reserve/Northcoast Behavioral: Sort of like a trinity of hospitals. All different, all the same. Hawthornden and Western Reserve are gone, but a State of Ohio psychiatric hospital is still there in the name of Northcoast. MUCH smaller than it use to be. Cleveland Psych has closed, staff and patients have merged with us.
I’ve found quite a bit of information, but I’m still digging for more. I would really like to talk to any of you that worked at the hospital. I’m lacking information from the ‘60s-’80s. Contact me at rudyj58@gmail.com
“66.153.221.130” you must have worked in cottage 21? Lets talk.
“71.66.102.57” The first building was located where the McKee (4 story) building is today. Originally known as Cottage 1, it was redesignated Cottage 6 in the early ‘50s. Cottage 6 was demolished around 1970 (still working on a exact date) to make room for the new “Geri” building (renamed after Lawrence McKee in 1989.)
I worked maintenance for 18 years, (and after 11 years as a TPW am going to finish out this career in maintenance) so am very familiar with the tunnel system. The main purpose of the tunnels was to was to get the utilities; steam, water, electric, phone and now computer cables to all the buildings. While I have been working there staff has been discouraged/denied from using the tunnels. Just a small section of the once 1 ¼ mile of tunnel.

Daughter of former patient seeking information
I am the daughter of a former Hawthornden patient who was there off and on beginning in the late 50's until the facility shut down. I am particularly interested in obtaining old medical records. My mother recently passed away. Any leads will be much appreciated.

Records are always a touchy subject and hard to come by. Due to HIPAA rules it is almsot impossible to get records released unless you meet certain criteria. One way would be to have your physician request the records as part of your own health concern. In some cases the information can be released this way, otherwise you need to prove you are executor of the estate and go through the legal process to get records which can be time consuming and costly.

To request records from the Ohio Department of Mental Health please go here [1] . There is a separate listing for requesting death records at the the very bottom of the page. There is also a listing for contact information for the state archives which are held in the Mahn Center Alden Library in Athens OH by Ohio University.

Another option might be to contact the county historical society to see if they have any records. The Summit Co historical society can be reached at
550 Copley Road Akron, OH 44320
(330) 535-1120.

Best of luck.
