Trying to Find My Great Grandfather
I have been working on family history and I am trying to find information about my Great Grandfather who was a patient at the hospital when he died in the 1950's. Does anyone know if it is possible to see a patient census or something of the sort anywhere?

Do you know what year he was admitted? The 1950 federal census wont be available another 10 years. As we've seen from other hospitals, Michigan doesn't seem to either have info or willing to share.

looking for my great uncle
My great uncle was at this hospital. I know very little I know he died in 1972 I think born in 1906. I was told he worked the farm there. Can you tell me where I could go for more information on his records and where he may be buried?

Actually on further review I was able to find out he died in 1944 so his time at the hospital would have been earlier than the '50's as I thought. It looks like he was a patient in upstate New York in 1940 but was transferred to Michigan since this is where his family was.

I you post your unlces name we could try looking him up in the social security death index. Based on the county he died in you can request a death certificate which may give some answers and could help to find where he's buried. Any records would probably still be sealed unless you can become executor of his estate or show cause to a dr to request his records. Those are about the only ways HIPAA would allow for the release of medical records to you.

My aunt
My aunt was patient at the Traverse City State Hospital a few times during her life. She graduated from the engineering program at the University of Michigan in the 1950's. She was the editor of the university's newspaper and sought out a career in engineering.

At that time, women weren't supposed to be smart, and in her case: genius. It's also known that when people are so smart, they're also a little "out there". Well, she went too far "out there" quite a few times. After three admissions to the TCSH, she was never the same woman. She never talked about her visits to the hospital with me or her children, but I know that my dad knows what happened to her in there. He will NOT talk about it with anyone... it must have been pretty bad.

She had a lot going for her, it's too sad.

Birth records
Does anyone know of birth records for the year 1971 at the asylum? I know someone who was adopted that year and is looking for her birth mother.

Hi, I am looking for my birth mother. According to non-identifying info I received my birth mother was admitted to the TCSH when she was 13 yrs old and had several "escapes" including one over christmas 1970 where i was conceived in KY. I was born in Munson and was put up for adoption and rights signed off at 3 months of age. According to info my birth mother would have been 21 to 23 yrs of age at that time and came from Bay City area where she and her sibilings were taken and put into foster care before she was put in TCSH.

I want to know if they did MKultra experiments or project monarch experiments on the patients?

There is no reason nor proof that any government lead projects were done here or any other state facility. Most rumors and stories saying otherwise are quackery. The only well documented projects are mostly related to the lobotomies and walter freeman, whom I don't think was funded by any government groups at all. Almost any project of that nature would be at an army or government owned facility.

Michigan is one of those states that is difficult to obtain records from. Go to this link and it gives details of the process to obtain any old records or information.

Adam Cornell. grandson of Jim Cornell.
Ron, I have enjoyed reading all of the stories you share, and appreciate the time you have invested to do so. The state hospital has always intreged me .. I love anything with history and many of my family members were employeed by the hospital. Funny thing is I'm now a resident here ...however at my own free will ..besides the ocassional strange noises no paranormal stuff, not that I wanna upset the ghost hunters.
Anyhow sometimes I get bored and wish these walls could talk. (Maybe I don't) but I start to dig the internet to answer some of the questions I have. In the process I stumbled on one of your forums .. Someone had asked if you remember any employee names. When I saw u list my grandfather Jim Cornell I got the shivers.. My father had told me he worked mostly hall 6 so I was a little surprised. Anyhow jus wanted to say hi n thanks for the good reading material. My grandpa Jim was always very loving and good to me. I hope he was good to you as well.
