medical records
I have been in touch with Independence Mental Health Institute in Iowa searching for my grandmother's medical records from her time there in the early 1930's late 1940's. My response was that they searched and cannot find anything on file by that name. We (her family) know she was there, she told us and other family members from that time told us. Should I just assume that they are lying about not having those records because of HIPPA and continue to go the proper legal route to continue to try to obtain these records? My grandmother has been gone for 16 years now.

Unfortunately that is a common line they use at most state hospitals when it comes to old records. Sometimes they just don't want to look so they'll say they don't have any records hoping that's the end of the inquiry. It is possible they really don't have the records, but they aren't quite old enough to have disappeared, especially since the hospital is still in operation.

Given their age I would say there is a decent chance they are sitting collecting dust or mold is\n some basement room.

I don't know if it's federal or state law going into effect, but the state hospital here is having to digitize and archive all the records they have. Hopefully this will get some institutions to finally dig out all the old patient info they have laying around. As it is now, most don't have any type of inventory of what records they have.

My grandfather
I so want to view records of my grandfather who I believe was admitted to MHI of course not called that at the time. It was called an insane asylum and I believe he was committed about 1930 to Independance Ia. All it took then were relatives to say you were crazy and believe me he wasn't. His sisters wanted the family farm and I know he was a drinker but he had 4 children he was raising one being my Dad. I loved him dearly. He was a big guy very strong and I know they broke his nose there. I think he may have been there at least 3 yrs. So sad back in those days when they had such limited knowledge. I am an aging nurse and would love to see his his records. I don't know how to go about doing it and they probably may not let me view them if they were violent to him. SUE

I remember Irene as I was a former patient of Dunning. Irene was lobotomize. Unfortunately it didn't improve her malady, so after extreme electro-shock treatments (which didn't take), her corpse was thrown in with the rest of the nuts in Potters Field. To bad, so sad, ha, ha.

Is that comment supposed to be funny ? Maybe you should have stayed there !!!!

Hi,

I am a former patient of the infamous Chicago State Hospital (Dunning), Formerly located at 6500 W Irving Park Road (Now the Dunning Shopping Center). In 1969 at 13 years of age I ran away from a foster home, lived on the streets of Chicago for 7 months, and was arrested on 12/07/1969, and placed in the Audie Home ( a juvenile correctional facility) not knowing what to do with me the juvenile court judge ordered me to be committed to the Chicago State Hospital, on 01/27/1970 at 14 years of age I was admitted to the MEN'S Recieving Ward at Chicago State, 4 months later I was transferred to an adolescent unit CW 10 was for boy's and CW 11 was for girls, the hospital itself was a huge place about 30 buildings, it was a small town, it had a school, a church, a store, there was even a medical hospital on the grounds, I have a lot of memories both good and bad, I escaped from the hospital when I was 16, so I was there for about 2 years.

I guess what concerns me the most is that there is nothing on the internet or anywhere else about the Chicago State Hospital, as if it never existed. On August 15, 2012 a complaint will be filed in the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois at Chicago, Illinois on behalf of all children that were housed in CW 10 and CW 11 at the Chicago State Hospital . children that were housed there were denied the basic right to an education ( there was no state accredited school on the grounds ) they were given anti-psychotic drugs ( milarel and thorizine ) that are not FDA approved for persons under 18, they were provided cigarettes and tobbacco by the State, the were placed in leather restaints and put in locked quiet rooms for discipline, and they were physically abused by Hospital security and staff. The defendants in this complaint will be : Lisa Madigan, the Illinois Attorney General and the Illinois Dept. of Humane Services (Formally the Illinois Dept. of Mental Health.

Looking for records and information on a patient Elizabeth Utting
Today I learned my great grandmother was a patient here at Chicago State Hospital. She died in May 1937. I do not know how long she lived there. I have found she is buried at what is now known as Forest home Cemetery, part of the Waldheim Cemetery Complex.

I would love to get a hold of her medical records and any other information on her.

Beth,
Unfortunately I haven't heard of anyone having much success with old Chicago State records. Most were lost about the time the old hospital closed and was demolished. You could try one of the universities in the city, the county hasn't been very helpful unfortunately.

You mentioned contacting one of the universities in the city, for information. My great grandfather also died at the Dunning state hospital in the 1940's. I was trying to find the death certificate. - I assume that death certificates weren't filed at cook county?

I appreciate any information. Thanks

The Cook County clerk's office should have copies of all death certificates. Only thing that can be found online is a summary of one, not the original. You could try the familysearch.org site, they had some digitized, but not sure if it's searchable yet.

What official contacts are you looking for? Anyone directly with the hospital is long retired by now since the hospital closed in the early 1970s. I can email you the only contact I have of a retired employee.
