Northern State Hospital for the Insane opened in 1909. By 1912 it housed 113 patients. These initial patients were all males who worked on the grounds making posts, shingle bolts, and gardening. The death ratio at that time was less than 3% per year. At that time, patients remained hospitalized until their death. Northern State chose to build a crematorium to take care of the needs of those without families. Hospital closed in 1976 and now parts of the facility are used for Job Corps & also a Drug Rehab.
