The developmental center for the mentally disabled, one of four statewide that was the idea of then-governor Lurleen Wallace, opened in 1971 after her death and closed in 2003. Used by the Alabama National Guard in 2013. Plans were announced in 2020 to turn the property into a campus for the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind.
